CUT:
Many people confuse the cut with the shape of the diamond. Diamonds are cut into any number of shapes, depending on the nature of the rough stone. The most popular are round, marquise, oval, pear, heart, and emerald. The choice is largely a matter of personal preference. Whatever the shape, however, it takes a master diamond cutter to achieve a well cut diamond. When cut to good proportions, the diamond is better able to handle light, creating more scintillation, more sparkle.

A Perfect Cut Too Deep Too Shallow
When a Diamond is cut to good proportions, the light is reflected from one facet to another and then dispersed through the top of the stone. If the cut of a diamond is too deep, some light escapes through the opposite side of the pavilion. If the cut is too shallow, light escapes through the pavilion before it can be reflected.

COLOR:
In general, the most valuable and desirable color is no color at all. A totally colorless stone will allow light to pass through effortlessly. The resulting light can then present a brighter rainbow of colors.

CLARITY:
To determine a diamond's clarity, it is viewed under 10-power magnification by a trained eye. Most diamonds include very tiny natural birthmarks known as inclusions. The fewer and smaller the inclusions are, the less likely they are to interfere with the passage of light through the diamonds and the more beautiful the diamond will be. More than any other stone, the diamond has the capability to produce the maximum brilliance. A diamond that is free of surface blemishes and inclusions is very rare and therefore more valuable.

CARAT WEIGHT:
Weight is the fourth factor determining the value of a diamond. Weight is measured in carats. One carat is divided into 100 points, so that a diamond of 75 points weighs .75 carats. Carat weight is the easiest of the 4 C's to determine. But two diamonds of equal weight may have significantly unequal value depending on their cut, color, and clarity. A diamond purchase must carefully balance these four characteristics to select the diamond most suitable to your taste and budget.
